Build A Better Planet needs your help!

Another tale of the 99% . . .
On Saturday, March 25, 1911, The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory bore witness to one of the most notorious tragedies in New York labor history. A carelessly discarded cigarette fell into a bin that hadn't been emptied in a couple of months. The factory's workers, mostly immigrant women and girls as young as 14 who worked as seamstresses, had been LOCKED IN by their employers to prevent them from taking a lunch break. The factory owners, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, learned of the fire, and exited the building, but failed to alert the workers or unlock the doors. As the factory was engulfed in flames, workers ran to the building's only fire escape, which was rusted and in need of repair. As the first workers climbed onto the fire escape, it snapped like a twig, throwing 20 workers to their deaths and trapping the remaining employees who were forced to jump to their deaths or perish in the flames.
In a sick twist of irony, the very same workers had marched in the streets of New York prior to the fire demanding better work conditions. The women, who worked a minimum of 9 hours per day, six days per week for $7 - $12 per week, were beaten by NYPD officers. On the evening of March 25, 1911, those same NYPD officers collected the bodies of the same women from the sidewalks on Washington Place, near Washington Square Park.
Blanck and Harris were charged with manslaughter for locking the workers in the factory, resulting in 146 tragic deaths, but were AQUITTED two days later. While the families of the victims won a civil suit, they were only awarded $75 per dead woman or girl. Blanck and Harris received an insurance payout of almost $200,000 and about $400 per casualty. Two years later, Blanck was arrested, again, for locking the doors of another one of his factories. He was fined $20.

To our Build A Better Planet friends in the Northeast affected by Hurricane Sandy, as New York City's trains begin to run again, and we prepare to start Monday off by getting back to business as usual, we know that many of our friends and neighbors are still without power, heat, and water. Please let us know if you are in need of anything. We will do our best to connect you with resources in the Tri-state area.
If anyone would like to donate food, supplies, or warm clothes for those who have been displaced due to Hurricane Sandy, please contact us. We are working with many groups who are more than happy to distribute donations to those in need.
